Acts of Arrangement

Artplex Gallery is pleased to present Acts of Arrangement, an exhibition featuring the work of T. Through layered construction and a shared sensitivity to surface, both artists create serene, materially rich compositions that exist between painting and object. Their works are shaped by additive processes—gestures of placing, embedding, and layering—that lend dimensional quietude to each canvas. United by a restrained palette and a contemplative approach to form, Blackstock and Kuttner offer a parallel exploration of how subtle material interventions can transform the painted surface into something sculptural, meditative, and resonant.
Kimberly Blackstock is best known for her “pools of paint” works—luminous compositions defined by layered acrylics, translucent veils, and sculptural drips. Her practice spans a range of formats, from purely abstract fields to oceanic and horizon-based landscapes, as well as her “Journey paintings,” which blend conventional brushwork with her signature poured elements. Drawing from a background in design and illustration, Blackstock eschews traditional tools in favor of more intuitive methods—using rags, squeeze bottles, and gloved hands to apply and manipulate pigment. Her paintings prioritize evocation over depiction, using color, texture, and layered translucency to conjure sensation, rhythm, and mood. Rather than illustrating a specific place, each composition invites a felt experience—suggesting shifts in light, atmosphere, and emotional tone through the slow build-up of form and surface.
Peter Kuttner approaches his paintings as layered environments, composed of affixed elements and soft fields of color. Guided by a zero-waste ethos and a commitment to intuitive construction, he assembles his works through a process of separation and reapplication—creating individual components, allowing them to respond to gravity, evaporation, and time, and then carefully placing them on the canvas. The resulting compositions feel both minimal and organic, marked by refined shapes and subtle surface variations. His works suggest structure without rigidity, form without insistence. Through this measured balance, Kuttner creates visual spaces that feel timeless—imbued with calm, quiet motion, and a restrained sense of joy.
Together, the works in Acts of Arrangement form a dialogue around process, material, and restraint. Both artists treat surface as an active space—something built over time through the layering of gesture, presence, and intention. Their paintings offer contemplative visual environments shaped by rhythm, accumulation, and tactile nuance. Through subtle variation and carefully composed elements, Blackstock and Kuttner create spaces that invite reflection—where each mark, texture, and layer contributes to a quiet, immersive experience of depth and resonance.
