About
Kate Tova’s "California Native Glitch" reimagines the California landscape through vivid color, reflective detail, and digital-inspired distortion. The panoramic composition stretches across the canvas in shifting bands of landscape and light, creating the impression of a familiar view briefly interrupted by a visual signal. Saturated tones and hand-applied thick paint give the surface a luminous, textured quality that changes with the surrounding light.
Tova draws on the contrast between the natural environment and the visual language of contemporary technology. The landscape remains recognizable, yet portions of the image appear fragmented, repeated, or displaced. This “glitch” introduces a sense of movement and gives the expansive horizontal format a distinctly contemporary rhythm.

Kate Tova’s practice is shaped by the varied places and visual environments she has experienced. The ornate architecture of her early surroundings and the saturated color of New Orleans continue to influence her use of bold palettes and layered surfaces. Now based in San Francisco, she explores the relationship between tactile painting and the imagery of the Information Era.
Tova has received awards and critical recognition through exhibitions in Vienna, Berlin, New York, Prague, and other international cities. Her work has appeared on album covers, been featured in international publications, and inspired a jewelry collection. Her distinctive visual language connects contemporary painting with design, fashion, and popular culture.
