Notations from an Altered View

December 12, 2026 - January 29, 2027

Artplex Gallery is pleased to present Notations from an Altered View, featuring the work of Max Naylor, Lee Herring, and Steven Nederveen. Using landscape as a point of departure, the exhibition considers the subjective character of perception and representation. Across the works, experience and temperament shape each composition, giving form to each artist’s own way of understanding the world. Landscape remains the shared reference, while each artist determines how it is felt, ordered, and made visible.

Max Naylor is a British contemporary painter whose practice moves between close observation and a highly personal sense of invention. Based in Bristol, he works across painting and drawing, building richly layered compositions that draw from nature, travel, and the subconscious. Naylor describes these imagined environments as “mindscapes,” where dense foliage, shifting skies, and expansive terrain develop into vivid alternate worlds. His instinctive approach allows each composition to grow through accumulation, with color, rhythm, and spatial depth giving structure to imagery that feels familiar without belonging to a single place. The resulting works distill accumulated experience into landscapes shaped by Naylor’s own sense of rhythm, depth, and atmosphere.

Working through abstraction, British painter Lee Herring builds landscapes from fleeting impressions and spontaneous mark-making. His early landscape works grew from rail travel across the United Kingdom, where passing views became fragments of color, atmosphere, and movement carried back into the studio. Working without preliminary sketches, Herring builds each composition through layers of acrylic, spray paint, markers, and varnish, using knives, trowels, and scrapers to expose and conceal areas of color as the painting develops. Herring’s paintings turn brief encounters into expansive abstract fields, retaining the energy and immediacy of what first caught his attention.

Steven Nederveen is a Canadian mixed-media artist whose practice moves between observation and personal interpretation. Years spent on Canada’s West Coast established a lived familiarity with the sea that continues to inform his compositions. Working across photography and painting, he builds layered seascapes from his own coastal imagery, using the ocean’s motion as the visual foundation for his work. Scraped and layered paint interrupts his photographic surfaces, giving the water a tactile and unsettled presence. As photographic detail recedes into atmosphere, Nederveen’s emotional perception becomes the defining presence of the work. The ocean becomes an outward expression of inner experience, giving his seascapes their psychological depth.

Since its establishment in 2018, Artplex Gallery has been a leader in showcasing high-quality original contemporary art. Located in West Hollywood, the gallery specializes in presenting a diverse spectrum of international artists whose works challenge conventions and captivate the imagination.
